Wolfson College

A coveted Green Plaque award

Wolfson College, founded in 1965, boasts buildings designed by Powell and Moya, with construction completed in 1974. These buildings were awarded Grade II listed status in 2011.

In line with its ambitious plan to cut emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, the college embarked on a major decarbonisation programme in 2021 which extended beyond campus buildings to include nearby off-site properties.

From concept to completion, we delivered robust cost planning, value engineering, contractor procurement, and cost management, on this award-winning education sector project recognised by the Oxford Preservation Trust as an exemplar for achieving sustainability.

Realising carbon neutrality

As a graduate college, the buildings are occupied year-round. The decarbonisation works had to be programmed, managed, and executed in a manner that minimised, the health and safety of risks of working in a live educational environment along with any, disruption to the students and fellows.

By leveraging fully renewable energy sources including the installation of new heat pumps and radiators to control heating and hot water, fabric upgrades to windows, improvements to roof and wall insulation and, a new sub-station to accommodate new infrastructure Wolfson College is now operating entirely fossil-fuel free.
