Wingfield Station

Life after the Beeching cuts

Wingfield Station, a Grade II* listed building dating back to 1840 is a rare survivor of Francis Thompson's picturesque stations along the Derby to Leeds line, making it a significant example of early railway architecture.

In 2012 the station was listed among the top ten ‘at risk’ buildings in the country, after years of neglect following its closure in 1967.

Amber Valley Borough Council’s compulsory purchase and subsequent transfer to Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust in late 2019 marked the beginning of its restoration journey. The mission; to preserve its heritage value to the nation.

Completed in 2023 with funding support from English Heritage and National Lottery Heritage Fund the restoration involved significant fabric repairs, undertaken adjacent to live rail infrastructure during possession works agreed with Network Rail.

Internal restoration to provide an authentic and engaging visitor space, along with external works to improve access and parking across the station yard, have been critical to the ongoing financial success and future preservation efforts.

Award winning restoration

Having been appointed to provide early cost planning and support the clients funding application, our quantity surveying team provided specialist procurement advice and robust cost management as the project progressed to completion. Our rigor, sector experience, and professionalism helped the client and project stakeholders maximise the use of their available budget and ensure the projects financial success.

Today, Wingfield Station operates as a tearoom, shop, and heritage centre offering visitors a glimpse into how it looked in 1840, while enjoying views of the Midland Main Line.  These retail and hospitality facilities provide an essential income for future up-keep.

The historical significance of the project has been recognised with prestigious awards, including:

  • RICS East & West Midlands Regional Awards 2024 – Winner (Heritage Project), and
  • RICS National Awards 2024 (UK) – Highly Commended.
