The Walronds, a Grade I listed house on an ancient burgage plot in Cullompton Town Centre, Devon, boasts a rich history dating back to the late Tudor period between 1570 and 1605.
With its fine oak-panelled rooms, elaborate plasterwork ceilings, decorative over mantels, and a wealth of other details, the house’s main 16th-century fabric had remained largely unchanged despite continuous habitation.
Initially commissioned by the Cullompton Walronds Preservation Trust to secure funding for a future use vision of a modern community space and residential letting, our project development team provided essential support in writing the funding application guided by our quantity surveying colleagues calculating robust cost plans that framed the investment ask and delivery budgets.
On behalf of English Heritage and National Lottery Heritage Fund we provided critical cost management and project governance for investors during detailed design and project execution phases, over 18-months.
Work on the ground floor involved project management and principal designer teams managing, monitoring and controlling the safe and careful deconstruction of the internal building fabric, ensuring each element was numbered and catalogued for accurate reassembly. Installation of new mechanical and electrical infrastructure support modern use requirements while preserving the historical integrity of the house. Upper floors have been sympathetically converted into a high-quality holiday cottage, providing an additional revenue stream for the Trusts preservation mandate.
Today, The Walronds is a commercially successful community hub with a hospitality and retail offering.
Retaining its historical charm and significance, the new meeting rooms and a flexible space for community-based services including outdoor events within the recreated landscaped gardens (delivered within our scope of services), is testament to our ability to modernise and repurpose heritage buildings with precision and care.
