St Andrew Church - Holborn

A Timeless Sanctuary Reimagined

St Andrew Holborn, a Grade I listed church, has been a beacon of solace in the heart of London for over a millennium.

Reduced to ruins during WWII, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1961, honouring Christopher Wren’s original 17th-century design. As a guild church without a designated parish, in the post war era it faced dwindling visitor numbers and fell into disrepair.

Appointed by St Andrew Holborn Guild Church Council our involvement in the most recent restoration commenced at project design phase with our quantity surveying team providing cost planning services.

Our scope evolved with the project, and we supported the selection and appointment of contractors and undertook active cost management and reporting throughout the work on-site until completion.

The project team also included our health and safety colleagues, appointed as principal designer. Their involvement ensured safety considerations and regulatory compliance were addressed throughout the project.

St Andrew the fisherman, Mary 'Star of the Sea,' and Wren's astronomical legacy

Shortlisted for a RIBA London Award – the innovative restoration with sustainability at its core incorporated the use of healthy materials, energy-efficient fixtures, and natural ventilation, ensuring comfort year-round.

The new baptistery chapel features a font set over a rediscovered spring in the former crypt. Enriching christenings with natural water. A decluttered interior adorned with white and pale hues offer a serene light-filled haven and the new stone, diamond-patterned, floor with repurposed pews provide an engaging flexible multi-purpose space for events.

Hosting services, hospitality events,  meetings and conferences means the church is economically thriving since the restoration and can continue to welcome visitors who can also purchase gifts and merchandise from the retail shop.
