Royal Armouries - Fort Nelson

Navigating historical fortifications

Fort Nelson, a Victorian Gun Fort above Portsmouth Harbour, is a Grade II listed building and scheduled ancient monument.

Initially constructed to prevent the harbour from an in-land attack, it is now home to the Royal Armouries collection of historic cannon and large artillery.

From concept to completion our expert heritage advisors led this transformative restoration project, which involved the construction of a new visitor centre and café, increased parking, a new main entrance and a children’s play and activity area.

Our project development team managed the grant application process, based upon cost plans developed by quantity surveying colleagues, and provided project governance and cost management in-line with National Lottery Heritage Fund requirements. Having secured funding on behalf of our client, Royal Armouries, our team provided programme management of risks and opportunities, the project management coordination of complex and competing stakeholder interests, and the appointment and management of consultants and specialist contractors.

This technically, logistically and legally challenging scope of work involved complex lifting operations over a deep moat and high walls, the diversion of a high-pressure gas main, and lease and land-use negotiations with neighbours, the local authority, and central government.
