Newport Minster - Isle of Wight

A Historic Gem Reborn

Newport Minster, a stunning Grade I listed church on the Isle of Wight, has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly a thousand years. .

Dedicated to both Thomas Becket and Thomas the Apostle, we were incredibly grateful to be a part of the remarkable transformation to preserve the heritage of this historic church and enhance its role as a community hub.

We were involved in both restoration phases providing quantity surveying and project management during the design phases to completion of work on site.

Phase 1 competed in 2022 focused on essential stonework repairs, slate re-roofing, and conservation of monuments and stained-glass windows.  The fabric of the building had been in significant disrepair.

Phase 2, completed in 2024, saw a comprehensive internal re-ordering, including new flooring, crypt masonry stabilisation, and the installation of modern mechanical and electrical facilities including underfloor heating, along with improved flexible seating solutions and new meeting rooms.

A versatile space for worship, community events, and cultural activities.

Reopened in May 2024 by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh the Minster now has a versatile space for worship with important social impact.

The flexible space serves as a thriving arts, culture and leisure hub for exhibitions, concerts, meetings, and plays.

The Play Café compliments these important amenities and provides and additional source of hospitality income, necessary for future preservation of this historically and spiritually significant building.

Circa 30,000 visitors each year will now enjoy Newport Minsters rich heritage, since its removal from England’s ‘At Risk Register’. This transformation stands as a testament to the power of conservation, the courage to consider re-purposing listed buildings, and community spirit.
